| | | | | | | Antigua is perfect for yacht charter, with constant trade-winds. The sister island of Barbuda has shell laden beaches so long that they dip below the horizon Whether you’re looking for tranquillity, a great nightlife or a combination of both, Antigua is a great place to find it. Although a good starting point for sailing either north or south, you may find it difficult to leave the glistening beaches and wonderful anchorages of Antigua itself. Nelson’s dockyard at English Harbour is a spot of historic beauty and interest. It is the only working Georgian dockyard in the world and apart from including a museum dedicated to Admiral Nelson who hid his fleet at English Harbour, Nelsons Dockyard is an active yachting centre. Consider a catamaran or motoryacht if speed is important. A 10 day charter is recommended if you wish to start in Antigua and end in St. Martin.
Antigua regattas : In April : Classic Yacht Regatta, hosted by the Antigua Yacht Club. In May: Rolex Antigua Sailing Week: One of the top regattas of the world. It is run under the auspices of the Antigua Hotels & Tourist Association. This local sailing week has evolved into an international event attracting competitors from all over the world. Thousands flock to enjoy the party atmosphere and non stop social scene. The boats involved are packed with Olympic and round the world sailors so it's a chance to compete against the best yachtmen.
Barbuda and St Kitts and Nevis : The tranquil island of Barbuda is renowed for its sandy beaches. Snokerllers are in for a treat with eagle rays and sting rays a common sight over the colourful coral. From Barbuda it is possible to visit the tiny islands of St Kitts and Nevis. These green and lush islands beautifully combine rainforests and unspoilt beaches with the best-conserved colonial settlements in the Caribbean.
Diving : Diving is very popular around Antigua and can be arranged locally. There is also the facility to arrange "rendez-vous" diving.
Marina & starting point : The Antigua base at the Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour is the perfect point for exploring the coastline and some of Antigua's lovely beaches. Nelson’s Dockyard has some great nightlife throughout December to May, while nearby Shirley Heights is a popular gathering place for the famous “Jump Up”, BBQs and punch parties with dancing and live music. Local Creole and good international cuisine can be enjoyed on Antigua.
