Puerto Rico is an interesting blend of Spanish, West Indian and American culture. It is primarly Spanish much of the cuisine as well as holiday traditions. Many cities such as San Juan and Ponce still preserve the colonial Spanish architecture.
The African influence forms a large part of the national identity. You can still hear Yoruba drums in the countryside, and Salsa music has become a major export to the world. Finally, being a Commonwealth, Puerto Rico enjoys many conveniences and infrastructures found on the mainland, while preserving its unique Caribbean mood.
Puerto Rico and the Spanish Virgin Islands are secluded and beautiful destinations for sailing. Vieques and Culebra are about four hours away from Fajardo sailing. They are much of what was the Caribbean years ago: a laid-back and inexpensive place populated by colorful locals and American that have chosen the slower pace. You will discover many wild and fabulous beaches: Flamenco Beach in Culebra is considered the second most beautiful beach in the world. Snorkeling in healthy coral reefs is possible directly from the beach. There you can find leatherback turtles and many colorful fish.
